Vesuvius by Velocipede

Mountaineer Sir Edmund Hilary said he climbed Everest “because it is there.” Seabourn Quest Captain Geir-Arne Thue-Nilsen seems to live by the same motto but with a bike. Last time, we saw him atop Corcovado in Rio de Janeiro. Earlier this month, he went to the top of Mt. Vesuvius outside Naples, Italy. And this time he brought guests Mr. Richard and Mrs. Martha Jean Nitzberg with him! They started from the Torre del Greco and pedaled up to the crater nearly 1200 meters/4000 feet above sea level. The Nitzbergs are used to mountain-climbing on their bikes; they live in Colorado in the U.S. Captain GA says it was “… beautiful, sunny and clear – all in all a great day with great company!”

The three intrepid cyclists: Mr. and Mrs. Nitzberg with Captain GA.

Beautiful view of Bay of Naples from the top
