Odyssey Godparents and the Maiden Voyage

Guests aboard the eagerly-anticipated maiden voyage of Seabourn Odyssey will share the unprecedented honor of acting as Godparents, an honor usually reserved for royalty or celebrities. The way Seabourn sees it, their guests are the primary reason this vessel is being built. So it makes sense that they should participate in an event symbolizing the beginning of Odyssey’s career.

The lucky few who have tickets aboard Odyssey’s sold-out maiden voyage, scheduled to depart Venice, Italy, on June 24, 2009, will partake in a christening ceremony. The practice of breaking a bottle of christening liquid against the bow of a new ship began in the 1800’s and is well-known as a good-luck ritual. Godparents will be provided remote control mechanisms that will “trigger” champagne to crash against the vessel while the sun sets over Venice. Godparents will also see their names engraved on a plaque displayed on board, further distinguishing them as a part of Odyssey history.

The Yachts of Seabourn often venture to exotic and sophisticated corners of the world such as Istanbul, Mumbai and Marseille. Odyssey’s first voyage will continue this practice. After the christening in Venice, the Odyssey will embark on a 14-day voyage through the Dalmatian coast, the Greek Isles and Turkey.

Seabourn would like to invite Odyssey Godparents to share stories with us through your own diaries and online blogs, or feel free to leave comments below. Is this your first trip with Seabourn? Are you taking this trip for a very special occasion? Tell us a little about you.
