Claudio Liborio Mixes Original “Sherry Blossom” Cocktail in Semifinals Against the World’s Best
At Seabourn, we have long transformed the way guests wine and dine at sea with premier culinary offerings, five-star service and a world-class craft cocktail program. Our distinguished food and beverage staff took their talent on shore last week, sending Claudio Liborio, bartender aboard Seabourn Sojourn, to compete at the semifinals of the Diageo World Class Championship in Miami, mixing his signature “Sherry Blossom” cocktail.
Liborio competed against Marc McArthur of Norwegian Cruise Line and Lazar Milosavljevic of Celebrity Cruises. McArthur was named the winner and Diageo Global Travel’s best bartender for 2017. He will continue to the final competition in Mexico City later this summer.
Sponsored by London-based multinational distiller Diageo, the Diageo World Class Championship is considered the world’s most prestigious cocktail competition, drawing professional bartenders from more than 50 countries. Liborio has trained with world-renowned mixologist Brian Van Flandern, who has partnered with Seabourn to transform bar offerings across the fleet, and was one of four Seabourn bartenders to enter the competition and the only one headed to Miami.
Originally from Portugal, Liborio has been in the hospitality industry since the age of 15, having trained under Alvaro Andrade, founder of Bartending Association in Setubal, Portugal. “It is an honor to compete against some of the best bartenders in the world and represent Seabourn at the Diageo World Class Championship,” he says, adding, “Seabourn prides itself on delivering unrivaled service and experiences, and I’m excited to showcase this during the competition.”
Liborio credits his mentors and teachers for his skills, and prime among those is Seabourn partner Brian Van Flandern, who helped reignite Liborio’s passion and creativity for the profession. Beyond his original Sherry Blossom, Liborio’s own favorite cocktail is the classic Negroni, which he likes to enjoy “after a long day on the beach sitting on a terrace watching the sunset.”
Considered the most world’s most prestigious contest for professional bartenders, the Diageo World Class Competition is an internationally recognized competition designed to elevate the craft of the bartender and build careers in the industry. Each bartender had to submit two original cocktail recipes – one made with a white spirit, the other with a brown spirit, and both with a Diageo Reserve Spirit at its base. Judges consider creativity, originality, personality, presentation, poise, balance, flavor, color and temperature.
